I ran my first marathon in 3:44 minutes using the Garmin Coach training plan on the Forerunner 255. Here’s my honest review, including what worked and what didn’t.

If you’re:

  • Training for your first marathon
  • Want structure without overthinking your plan;

Garmin Coach is a strong option. As an experienced, but admittedly ‘lazy’ runner, I needed something that would keep me disciplined and introduce proper training phases. Garmin helped introduce new workouts, such as threshold workouts and tapering.

What I Liked About the Garmin Marathon Plan

Adaptive and Personalized Training

It’s dynamic. You input your goal time and pace, how long you have to train, and what days of the week you want to run. From there, it builds a structured plan with phases like:

  • Base/Build
  • Peak
  • Taper

The plan also adjusts based on:

  • Your performance
  • missed workouts
  • Recovery metrics

For a first-time marathoner and busy full-time student, this makes training seamless, guided, and low-stress.

Built-in Accountability

One of the biggest advantages was how little you have to think about it. Each day, I just had to open my watch and see my workouts for the week. Had I planned each week for myself, I don’t think I would have been as consistent.

Strength training

The plan programmed guided strength training (option for body weight/weighted) each week, which I found to be a huge perk.

What I Didn’t Like

Long run mileage was too low

Most traditional plans build up to 20-21 miles (32-34 km). Garmin capped my longest run at 15 miles (about 24km), which felt insufficient for the marathon. I planned my own 20-mile run in about 3 weeks.

Overly Conservative Adjustments

The dynamic feature is also a downside. Sometimes Garmin used a poor sleep score and recommended that I take a rest day or an easy run. In my personal opinion, I’d rather get the mileage in.

Final Verdict

I recommend Garmin Coach for first-time marathon runners who want to save time or feel too busy to make a plan on their own. It truly made training seamless and manageable with school and travel (I’m studying abroad, and every week is packed with movement). However, this doesn’t mean you can skip out on other research. Always listen to your body, adjust accordingly, and don’t follow the plan on its own.

Race Day

Check out how I prepared for my run on our Instagram

Why do we run hills? Some might feel that they are the most difficult part of the run.

However, research shows that they can be the most effective way to improve performance. You get fitter and faster by tackling hills, and they build strength in your core and lower body. They require your muscles to work harder, while also demanding more oxygen to support the exercise. This makes hills both a cardio and strength exercise. Hills improve your overall running form, because it forces you to ‘push’ yourself up the hill, helping drive your feet under you and not ahead of you (efficient running form!) So, how do you run uphill? It’s optimal to focus on maintaining a consistent pace uphill, and not to sprint and spend all your energy all at once. It is ok to walk before you increase your intensity, especially if you are new to running.

Don’t shy away from trail runs. High-elevation runs usually have the most rewarding views. From escaping to the hills above Florence, to exploring Villa Ghigi Park to escape the bustling city of Bologna, I experienced a rare quiet on hilly runs that can be refreshing and different. That intimidating elevation gain might be the most rewarding part of the run. So next time you ask yourself why you should run up that hill, just get over it!

Often described as Europe’s most ‘beloved’ city, Ljubljana, Slovenia, offers something for every kind of traveller. I came seeking some fresh, alpine air and natural beauty in Lake Bled. The true highlight of the trip came from a more historical experience: running along the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship. Known by Slovenes as the  “POT”, the path stands as the remains of the 32 km barbed wire fence that stood during fascist Italian occupation of Slovenia during WWII. The fence stood from 1942 until its liberation in 1945, and in 1972, the path was erected as a memorial and is now used by cyclists, pedestrians, runners, and even cross-country skiers in some sections.

I’m training for my first marathon and discovered the path online right before I visited Ljubljana, and couldn’t believe how perfect it was for my training. After a half day of exploring the cobbled city streets and castle, I laced up my shoes and set out on the gravel trail. My afternoon became more than just a training run. The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship encircles the city in a quiet, unbroken circle. In those few hours, I moved through countryside and residential neighborhoods, past Koseze Pond and into the forested Golovec Hill. The terrain changes from open stretches of farmland to shaded woodlands, where you can hear birdsong and the wind blow through the leaves. Climbing Golovec Hill is certainly demanding (especially after you’ve already covered 13 miles), but you’re rewarded with sweeping, 360-degree views of Ljubljana framed by mountain ranges.

What makes the POT unique is not just its landscape but its significance. Memorial markers and green directional signs appear intermittently along the path as subtle reminders that the peaceful loop traces the barbed-wire perimeter that once closed off Ljubljana during WWII. Running along the path was both contemplative and rewarding. I found myself stopping frequently to admire the scenery and try to imagine what life could have been like years ago, confined within the city’s borders. “Sightseeing” has emerged as a popular and efficient way to explore new cities, and for me, it went beyond that. The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship turned out to be perfect for my race training, because it was long, varied, and challenging. More importantly, it was an immersive experience to learn about a city and feel its history underfoot rather than through a museum.
