Alastair Humphreys, one of the world’s leading adventure travellers, has found that “the smaller the adventure, the bigger the audience” –this was the experience with his recent book focusing on “micro-adventures” that became a huge bestseller. “When you start doing stuff, no one cares, but you have a delicious freedom” meaning that you are unknown, so you are free to fail and do something crazy. “Starting an adventure is the hardest”. During his adventure career, Humphreys has cycled around the world over a period of 4 years—covering 73,000km, 60 countries, spending £7000 and using up 3 bikes–rowed across the Atlantic and authored 9 books, but interestingly enough, this book focusing on the micro adventure  of walking around London was the most successful. He explained that he had reached a point in his life where traditional adventures no longer excited him and decided to do something different. He encourages even those potential adventurers with “a lack of time, a lack of money, a lack of equipment or expertise” to explore close to where they live .. He also encouraged turning your hobby into your career. The key to success is to present authentic stories, a lot of brands tell the story, but not very well—but there is hope….”you start rubbish, and you get good”.  “You can become a world expert in a niche—be original, not gimmicky, provide great content, repeat, substance over style”.

‘What in the world is bikepacking?’ This may be you first thought after hearing the mashed-up name of this new outdoor activity. But the name doesn’t lie- it truly is a combination of backpacking and mountain biking, plus so much more. A bikepacker combines the minimalist camping style of one who backpacks through terrain while camping, but does so on a mountain bike, opening up new terrain and further distances than previously achievable on foot.

How do I bikepack?

This may be your next question. Bikepacking.com says that the best bike for bikepacking is the one you already have. If you have a mountain bike that you find comfortable, then that’s your best bet to use while bikepacking. The sport requires long hours in the saddle, so comfort is key. You also may need small packs that you can attach under the seat and handlebars, along with water bottle cages so that your back doesn’t take all of the pressure from your gear. You’ll also need the same things you would need for backpacking: a light tent, food supply, lightweight but protective clothes and appropriate footwear for both biking and the terrain.

What variety is there to Bikepacking?

Bikepacking is as diverse as its backpacking cousin, with every trip made by the adventurer to their own tastes. But generally speaking, bikebacking can be divided into two groups: multi-day mountain bikepacking, and expedition and dirt touring. Multi-day mountain bikepacking is the classic version: just light gear, a mountain bike, and a trail chosen by the bikepacker. These expeditions can be a 40 mile, sub-24 hour spin, or a multi-week tour of thousands of miles. Expedition and dirt touring is the more extreme version. Typically they are done overseas on remote and more difficult terrain, allowing the bikepacker to get to the heart of wild spaces much faster than traditional backpacking.

Now that you know something more about bikepacking, it’s time to get out there and do it! bikepacking.com is a great reference for newcomers on routes, gear, and general advice on how to enter the bikepacking world. This extreme sport just provides another way the modern explorer can get out there and experience the wildness of the mountain.

For a lot of companies and mostly the smaller ones, it’s more and more important to have their products displaying “made in Europe” stickers.

Norwegian manufacturer EClima produces woollen knits in Estonia, whereas the Swedish brand Lundhags has the bulk of its production in Portugal. Austrian company Löffler makes most of its innovative bike shirts in Austria, using a secret patented Transtex® weave that wicks moisture off the body. They also have a factory in Bulgaria that “works very well” , given that it is difficult to find skilled workers to sew garments in Austria.

The knife maker MoraKniv continues to make its products in Sweden after 126 years, underlining that the very sharp knives are designed to be tools, and not weapons, though they could easily do that  as well. The company even designed a “rookie” knife for kids, explaining that children should be taught to use knives in the proper way from an early age. Try telling that to an Italian mother!

Lots of sheep and sheep images at the recent Outdoor Show—woollen socks are really big this year, evidenced by the number of stands that offered this product. British manufacturers (including a company that shares our name, Horizon…) are proposing all sorts of new designs and colour combinations to keep your feet warm in winter.

Wool filler proposed by UK manufacturer HD is also replacing polyester filling and down in jackets—important in the trend toward natural fabrics with anti-odor and breathability characteristics. Light wool t-shirts are even being proposed for summer by Norwegian manufacturer AClima, while Austrian company Löffler has developed merino bike shirts….but will they stand up to the heat in Italy or Spain?

The wool used in these garments comes from New Zealand or Tasmania, where conditions are optimal for sheep to develop high-grade fine merino wool. Why not Norway or the UK? Because the climate is too damp and there are brambles and bushes that sheep brush against, ruining the wool. The New Zealand company Icebreaker was one of the first to introduce light-weight merino products for active wear—it even offers a merino sports bra for ladies who prefer wool to spandex.

Patrick “Pata” Degerman

Finnish explorer Pata Degerman told his story at the Outdoor Show about launching a mountain-climbing expedition to Antarctica –where numerous peaks have never been climbed, there are no accurate maps—at least not from conventional sources– and the areas called “death zones” are full of crevasses where no planes can land. Such expeditions are extremely expensive-—it took him 4 years and unending persistence to raise the money.  One would think that the hard part of an expedition is the expedition itself but the logistics and expense are almost as demanding as the expedition itself.

Pata emphasised,” “no” doesn’t mean “no” all the time—keep on trying, different angles, different persons—if you never ask anyone anything, you will never get anything. If you never tell anything, no one will ever tell you anything in return. If you never do anything, nothing will ever happen…If you can combine your thing with their thing….you might have something there.”

Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest place in the world—taking photos your eyes freeze shut once you take off the three layers of facemasks, teamwork is essential in the most extreme environment in the world, and everything you bring in, must be taken out again (Finnish Accord on Antarctic exploration)—which is how he and his excursion partner ended up carrying out more weight going out, than coming in….! Antarctica is a great place to lose weight as you need about 4 times as many calories as under normal circumstances—butter soup with cheese and olive oil and a little bit of pasta was a staple. When asked about his favourite food in Antarctica, he answered “Seafood”—what? Actually “See food!” any food! Including from a cache of supplies of peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies left over from a previous expedition—from 1966!

You finish your run, glance down at your watch and see that is has been approximately 35 minutes since you began. You know the area you ran through so you estimate that you ran around four miles. Quickly doing the math, you figure you ran between eight and nine minute miles. Ten years ago, this would have been the end of the quantification of your workout. Nowadays, the entire game has changed. When you finish a run in 2017, you can choose from upwards of 1,000 different apps on the Apple application store and see your speed, heart rate, average pace, the distance and route, altitude changes, calories burned, and even the changes in your gait over the course of the run. Then, you can share this information to a network that connects you to all of your other runner friends and get feedback on this specific workout. Then, you can integrate that information into various charts that compile the data from all of your previous runs and see how you have improved. This type of feedback has become the norm for runners, bikers, hikers, and even avid gym- goers.

Usage of Fitness Apps

Clearly, workouts have changed with the phenomenon of self-quantifying workout apps. But have they changed for the better? The creators and users of these apps seem to think so. The typical argument in favor of these apps is that they motivate the user by showing them their progress and creating a social network of others who participate in their chosen sport. The feedback feature on these apps essentially recreates the cheering crowds that line the finish line of a race, but at the end of every single run. Knowing one’s own statistics can also clearly highlight the way towards improvement. Perhaps long distance is one runner’s forte, but when hills are introduced he or she suddenly lags. Or maybe the runner’s gait becomes heavier and more prone to knee-injury when running on trails instead of concrete. In these ways, apps can be a motivator, a coach and a doctor in your pocket.

Results vs Enjoyment

However, there is a drawback to these apps. When one is so focused on the quantification of a workout, it might draw away from the qualification- or the actual enjoyment. Some studies have shown that measuring and rewarding activities can make the enjoyment of the actual activity decline. One researcher puts it like this: “‘The classic example: If you have kids—kids like to color, they’re coloring—if you give them an award for coloring, that makes them enjoy coloring less and makes them want to color less in the future.” (Etkin, The Atlantic). In other words, the enjoyment starts to focus on the reward, and not on the inherent enjoyment from the activity. In the world of exercise apps, the reward can either come from the social validation from friends on the app, or from a slight change or improvement in your stats. In this way, an activity that used to be self-rewarding, becomes externally rewarded.

Benefits depend on user

Like so many modern tools and toys, it seems that the benefit of workout apps is wholly dependent on the user. If one uses them as an added tool, they can prevent injury, inspire improvement, and found communities of like-minded people. However, they are just that. An added tool, not integral to the activity or the enjoyment, and secondary to the actual reason so many people participate in exercise- because they love it. After all, there isn’t a graph or chart that can mimic the feeling of a runner’s high or the burst of pride after a workout that just feels good, no matter what the stats say.
