Hills: Get Over it!

Why do we run hills? Some might feel that they are the most difficult part of the run.

However, research shows that they can be the most effective way to improve performance. You get fitter and faster by tackling hills, and they build strength in your core and lower body. They require your muscles to work harder, while also demanding more oxygen to support the exercise. This makes hills both a cardio and strength exercise. Hills improve your overall running form, because it forces you to ‘push’ yourself up the hill, helping drive your feet under you and not ahead of you (efficient running form!) So, how do you run uphill? It’s optimal to focus on maintaining a consistent pace uphill, and not to sprint and spend all your energy all at once. It is ok to walk before you increase your intensity, especially if you are new to running.

Don’t shy away from trail runs. High-elevation runs usually have the most rewarding views. From escaping to the hills above Florence, to exploring Villa Ghigi Park to escape the bustling city of Bologna, I experienced a rare quiet on hilly runs that can be refreshing and different. That intimidating elevation gain might be the most rewarding part of the run. So next time you ask yourself why you should run up that hill, just get over it!
